2022 Q2 Marks A Sharp Decline In Chromebook Shipments

August 2, 2022

Chromebook sales continued their downward trend in demand and shipments in the second quarter, with year-over-year shipments down 51.4%.

Only 6 million units were shipped during Q2 2022 below the 12.3 million units shipped in 2021 according to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC).

For the second quarter, the top five companies in the Chromebook market include Dell Technologies with 25.5% market share and 1.5 million units shipped, Acer Group with 22.6% market share and 1.3 million units shipped, Lenovo with 19.4% market share and 1.2 million units shipped, HP with 15.6% market share and 0.9 million units shipped, and Samsung with 6.2% market share and 0.4 million units shipped.

IDC said the decline was due to inventory buildup and changes in demand in the education sector.

Despite the sharp decline in shipments, Chromebook shipments are still above pre-pandemic levels, however. In his statement, Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers says that the pandemic still brought positive changes to the Chromebook market.

“The need for remote learning accelerated schools’ plans to reach a 1:1 ratio for PCs to students and this ratio will likely continue to hold in the future and even if PC shipments decline in other categories, Chrome will continue at these elevated levels,” Ubrani said in a statement.
