U.S. President Joe Biden has signed an executive order aimed at reducing the risks that artificial intelligence (AI) poses to consumers, workers, minority groups, and national security.
The order requires developers of AI systems that pose risks to U.S. national security, the economy, public health, or safety to share the results of safety tests with the U.S. government before they are released to the public. The order also directs agencies to set standards for that testing and address related chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity risks.
The order includes provisions to address the use of copyrighted works in AI training, including a call to “evaluate AI systems for IP law violations.” The Group of Seven (G7) industrial countries are also expected to agree on a code of conduct for companies developing advanced AI systems.
Biden said that the goal of the order is to “realize the promise of AI and avoid the risk.” He warned that “in the wrong hands, AI can make it easier for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the software that makes our society run.” Biden called on Congress to act to better protect personal data and address other AI-related concerns. He said that he hoped to have AI legislation ready in a matter of months.
