VoIP.ms Phone Services Disrupted by DDoS Extortion Attack

VoIP, the voice-over Internet provider, suffered a distributed denial-of-service attack on its network, including DNS name servers.

According to reports, the DDoS attack conducted by threat actors disrupted phone services, ultimately preventing users from configuring their VoIP devices and receiving or making calls.

The problem became even more complicated when the company advised customers to change their HOSTS file to refer the domain to their IP address to bypass DNS. The change gave threat actors the privilege of performing DDoS attacks directly at that IP address too.

VoIP had some success against the attackers after they switched their website and DNS servers to Cloudflare, but the problem persisted.

Threat actors claiming to be part of REvil claimed the attack and demanded a sum of $45,000, later increased to 100 Bitcoins.

However, experts believe that the threat actors in question were only impersonating REvil, who are not known for carrying out DDoS attacks.
