Amazon Outage Impacts Major Websites, Streaming Services

Share post:

Amazon’s cloud services were impacted by a severe outage Tuesday, temporarily disrupting a wide range of services and websites, including streaming platforms Netflix and Disney+, Robinhood and Amazon.com, keeping consumers from Christmas shopping.

Customers of Amazon Web Services such as Amazon’s Ring security cameras, mobile banking app Chime and the iRobot vacuum cleaner robot were also affected.

Users began reporting problems at 10: 40 a.m. on Tuesday and the outage may have affected a larger number of users.

Amazon attributed the outage to network devices and linked it to the Application Programming Interface (API), a set of protocols for building and integrating application software.

Downdetector.com recorded more than 24,000 incidents of users reporting problems with Amazon, including Prime Video and other services. The site tracks outages compiled from status reports from a number of sources, as well as bugs submitted by users on its platform.

Amazon had 27 outages in the last 12 months related to its services, as per web tool review website ToolTester.
