Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg News announced Microsoft hired experienced chipmaker Mike Filippo to design chips for its servers.
Filippo began his career as a CPU developer with chip designer AMD in 1996. He previously worked for Intel and UK-based ARM before moving to Apple, where he worked for more than two years.
Microsoft relies heavily on Intel and AMD to supply chips for its Azure cloud computing services as well as Surface PCs.
The move to hire Filippo means Microsoft is accelerating its push to create homegrown chips for its servers powering Azure cloud computing services.
Microsoft is working with Ampere Computing and Marvell Technology Group Ltd on Arm-based server chips. Microsoft is also working with Qualcomm Inc on an Arm-based processor in its Surface Pro X device.
