The site of the Russian Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities, was reportedly hacked, and internet searches for the site led users to a “Glory to Ukraine” sign in Ukrainian.
According to the Russian state news agency RIA, the ministry representative pointed out that the site had gone offline but that users’ data were protected. Other media however reported that hackers demanded ransom money to prevent the public disclosure of user data.
Ongoing cyberattacks on the Russian government and organizations have intensified in recent weeks following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian organizations compromised in recent weeks include the Kremlin’s official website, video-hosting site RuTube, and other state-owned platforms.
Most of these attacks are not targeted at money, as the investigation makes clear, and the attackers are using these coordinated cyberattacks to protest the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In addition to the attacks by the threat actors, Russia has also faced several sanctions from the international community. Major tech platforms have suspended or shut down their operation in protest at the country’s brutal war in Ukraine.
