U.S., U.K. sanctions Trickbot ransomware gang

February 10, 2023

The United States and the United Kingdom have recently sanctioned Russia’s notorious Trickbot hacking gang. This organization is well-known for its widespread and malicious cyberattacks, which have harmed individuals, organizations, and governments all over the world.

Trickbot has been sanctioned with asset freezes, travel bans, and trade restrictions. The Treasury Department of the United States also identified six individuals and five entities linked to the hacking gang. The U.K. government has taken similar steps, sanctioning two individuals and two entities linked to Trickbot.

In its announcement outlining the move, the U.S. Treasury noted that, “during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Trickbot targeted hospitals and healthcare centers, launching a wave of ransomware attacks against hospitals across the United States.”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that the United States and Britain were “committed to using all available authorities to defend against cyber threats.” British officials hailed the first-of-its-kind deployment of sanctions against cybercriminals and said it was just the “first wave” in “new coordinated action” against such groups.

“This is a hugely significant moment for the UK and our collaborative efforts with the U.S. to disrupt international cyber criminals,” Britain’s National Crime Agency Director-General Graeme Biggar said in a statement.

Trickbot has previously been responsible for numerous data breaches, the distribution of malware and ransomware, and the launch of phishing campaigns. The group’s actions have resulted in significant financial losses and disruption to critical services, making them a major threat to global cybersecurity.

Trickbot’s malicious software was once considered one of the most dangerous security threats on the internet, capable of stealing financial data, spreading across networks, and dropping ransomware.
