Western Digital suffers data breach

April 4, 2023

Data storage giant Western Digital has been dealing with a “network security incident” after detecting a break-in by an unauthorized third party into its internal systems.

The company has confirmed that hackers exfiltrated data from its systems during the attack that occurred on March 26, 2023, was taking steps to secure its business operations, but did not confirm the nature of the incident or revealed how it was compromised. However, some of its customer-facing services have been affected.

Western Digital has implemented incident response efforts and initiated an investigation with the assistance of leading outside security and forensic experts. The investigation is said to be in its early stages, and Western Digital is coordinating with law enforcement authorities to identify the perpetrator. The company is also implementing proactive measures to secure its business operations, including taking some of its systems and services offline.

Based on the investigation to date, Western Digital believes that the unauthorized party obtained certain data from its systems and is working to understand the nature and scope of that data. The affected services may include those that underpin some of Western Digital’s customer-facing products.

The company added that it is investigating the incident with an unnamed cybersecurity firm and coordinating with law enforcement.
