Most outsourced programmers in India could lose their jobs in the next year or two, according to Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque.
Mostaque said that the effects of AI mean that it is now possible to develop software with far fewer people. He pointed out that AI models can do everything from bug testing to unit testing to ideation, just better than humans.
This is not to say that all programmers will be out of a job. Mostaque said that AI will be used as “co-pilots” for programmers, freeing them up to focus on more creative and strategic tasks.
India is home to more than 5 million software programmers, and many of these jobs could be automated in the coming years. This is a major challenge for India’s IT sector, which is a major driver of the country’s economy. However, it is also an opportunity for India to become a leader in the development of AI-powered software.
TCS, India’s largest outsourcing provider, has already begun to invest in generative AI. The company has committed to train more than 25,000 engineers on the technology. TCS CEO N. Ganapathy Subramaniam said that AI will make an “enormous impact” on the way that TCS operates. He said that the company is already seeing the benefits of using AI to automate tasks such as bug testing and unit testing.
