Apple AI project in the works

July 20, 2023

Apple is working on a new AI project that could rival ChatGPT and Bard, according to a report from Bloomberg News.

The iPhone maker has built its own framework, known as “Ajax,” to create large language models (LLMs). These models are trained on massive datasets of text and code, and can be used to generate text, translate languages, and answer questions.

Apple is also testing a chatbot that some engineers call “Apple GPT.” This chatbot is being used internally for product prototyping, and is said to be able to summarize text and answer questions based on the data it has been trained with.

While Apple has discreetly integrated AI into select products like Apple Photos and its mixed-reality headset Vision Pro, analysts opine that the company has some catching up to do compared to its peers.

The project’s development is being spearheaded by John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of machine learning and AI, and Craig Federighi, the top software engineering executive. The new virtual assistant, born from this initiative, has impressed internally, effectively summarizing text and answering questions based on its trained data, closely resembling Bard, ChatGPT, and Bing AI.

Apple has not yet announced any concrete plans for its new AI project, but it is reportedly aiming to make a significant AI-related announcement next year, and the news of Apple’s AI project has sent the company’s shares up as much as 2%.
