Stack Overflow has announced that it is laying off 28% of its workforce. In a statement by the company’s CEO, Prashanth Chandrasekar, the layoffs come from a need to “cut costs” and maintain a “path to profitability.”
The layoffs come at a time when Stack Overflow is facing increasing competition from generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT. ChatGPT is able to provide programmers with instant corrections to their code, optimization suggestions, and explanations of what each line of code is doing. This is something that traditional forum posts on Stack Overflow can often struggle to do.
Chandrasekar argued that sites like Stack Overflow are still essential for chatbots, as they need to be trained on “something that’s progressing knowledge forward.” However, it is clear that the rise of generative AI is posing a significant challenge to Stack Overflow’s business model.
In a blog post, Chandrasekar said that Stack Overflow is working on a direct answer to ChatGPT in the form of “Overflow AI.” The company also hopes to get AI firms to pay to scrape the site’s data. However, it is unclear if these efforts will be successful.
