Generational divide and mismatch between AI excitement and usage: Study

May 28, 2024 Despite the buzz surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, a new study reveals that daily usage among the general public remains surprisingly low. According to research conducted by the Reuters Institute and Oxford University, only 2% of UK respondents use such AI products daily. However, the study highlights a significant generational divide: 18 to 24-year-olds are notably more engaged with these technologies.

Dr. Richard Fletcher, the lead author of the report, noted a “mismatch” between the excitement generated by AI and the actual interest from the public. This suggests that while AI has made a splash in the media and among tech enthusiasts, it has yet to permeate the daily digital habits of the majority.

The study, which surveyed 12,000 people across six countries, also delved into public perceptions of AI’s impact. While there is an overall expectation that generative AI will significantly affect society, especially in fields like news, media, and science, opinions on whether these changes will be beneficial are mixed. Most respondents are optimistic about AI’s applications in science and healthcare but express concerns regarding its use in news and its potential to threaten job security.

This research underscores the need for nuanced discussions about AI, involving policymakers, regulators, and the public, to navigate its societal implications effectively.
