Shopify Debuts Its Online Store 2.0 With New Features

July 2, 2021

Shopify is launching its Online Store 2.0, the most significant new edition of its Liquid Template Language since its launch.

The completely revamped online store is designed to make it easier for developers to develop customized features for retailers’ storefronts.

Specific new features for Online Store 2.0 include a new editor to make it more efficient for merchants to build their storefronts, and Theme App extensions to make it easier to expand and manage apps within themes.

Shopify also launched Dawn, its new standard for developing storefront themes, which is 35% faster than its current default theme. In addition, Shopify said that its new Theme Store will be open for developer submissions on July 15.

Shopify also announced major infrastructure investments in its APIs and developer tools, which the company says will ensure that retailers never have to reposition their storefronts to customize them.

Starting July 1, Shopify’s storefront API will include new shopping basket functionality, sales plans and localized shopper experiences, as well as international pricing.

Shopify also introduced Hydrogen, a framework for building custom shop windows, and Oxygen, a way to host Hydrogen storefronts directly on Shopify.

Shopify Checkout is now twice as fast and capable of handling seven times as much volume as the older version.

Shopify has also introduced checkout extensions that allow developers to integrate apps into Shopify Checkout.

When it comes to revenue sharing, Shopify said that it will lower its commission for app development to 0% for the first $1 million an app developer makes on its platform annually, and 15% thereafter.

The $1 million benchmark sets itself back annually, giving developers more earning potential annually.
