Airbnb Launches Tech Tool to Discourage Users from Booking Properties for Parties

August 18, 2022

Airbnb has introduced new “anti-party tools” in the U.S. and Canada to discourage users from booking properties just to party.

The screening tool “helps to identify potentially high-risk reservations” and prevents them from making a booking. It performs the screening by checking guests using criteria such as the distance of the guest’s house from a listing. Other factors include when the booking is made on weekdays or weekends and the length of the trip.

“The primary objective is attempting to reduce the ability of bad actors to throw unauthorized parties which negatively impact our Hosts, neighbors, and the communities we serve,” Airbnb said in its announcement.

Airbnb permanently banned parties around the world in June, and in August 2020 issued a temporary ban during the pandemic, when entertainment venues closed and prompted people to “take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platforms,” it said at the time.

Airbnb has already introduced the screening tool in Australia, where it has seen a 35% drop in unauthorized parties where the system has been introduced.
