Altman to testify before Congress on Artificial Intelligence regulation

May 11, 2023

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to testify before Congress next week, as policymakers aim to intensify their oversight of artificial intelligence (AI). Altman will present his testimony before a Senate panel with a focus on the ongoing efforts to establish effective regulations for AI, including potential legislation.

The hearing, hosted by Senator Richard Blumenthal’s subcommittee, aims to bring attention to the advanced algorithms and powerful technology behind AI. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer emphasized the importance of this topic during his meeting with Elon Musk, who has expressed concerns about the societal dangers of AI. Schumer is actively working on a legislative framework to address potential risks while promoting innovation in the tech industry.

In addition to Altman, the hearing will also feature testimony from IBM’s Christina Montgomery and New York University’s Gary Marcus. Altman is expected to appear in person alongside the other witnesses.

This hearing comes at a time when lawmakers and federal officials are grappling with the challenges posed by the growing popularity of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
