Amazon has reduced the number of software development job openings from 32,692 in May to just 299 this month.
According to Internet Archive captures of Amazon’s Software Development jobs category, the number of open positions decreased from 32,692 in May to 30,124 in July, 24,747 in September, 2,829 in November, and 373 in December.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote a blog post explaining that beginning January 18, the company would communicate with employees who had been laid off. Those layoffs primarily impacted Amazon Stores and People Experience and Technology (PXT) Solutions teams, but Amazon is unlikely to go on a hiring spree elsewhere in the company right now. Despite the layoffs, Amazon has not posted new job offers.
Amazon publicly urged Congress and state legislatures across the country in May to support and fund computer science education in public schools in order to “create a much-needed pipeline of talent that will carry us into the future.” In July, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy joined other Tech Giant CEOs in signing a public letter urging state governments and education leaders to increase CS education for K-12 students.
