Amazon reviews losing trust as number of fake reviews are uncovered

July 11, 2024 Amazon’s customer review system, once trusted for its verified buyer opinions, is increasingly under scrutiny as more and more stories of fake reviews surface in the news. Recent investigations have revealled how easily this system can be manipulated by unscrupulous sellers.

A PCWorld contributor reported received an offer of $21.65 for a five-star review on a $10.82 product. Direct payments and gift card offers are increasing in number, according to some reports.

Amazon is taking measures, including a $50 spending requirement for reviewers, but despite this paid reviews still persist.  But Amazon has also pushed back against third party apps like Fakespot, pressuring Apple to drop that app from their app store.

AI tools have exacerbated the problem by generating convincing fake reviews.

While these reviews are often convincing at first glance, there are some signals that purchasers should watch for including:

  • similar phrasing or timing across multiple reviews,
  • overly positive or negative content without details,
  • reviewers who only have 5 star ratings
  • numerous reviews from one person in a short period of time
