AMD unveils new AI chip to challenge Nvidia

June 14, 2023

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) chip that it says will rival Nvidia’s market-leading offerings.

The chip, called the MI300X, will be available in the third quarter of 2023 and will feature 192 gigabytes of memory. This will make it one of the most powerful AI chips on the market and could help AMD compete with Nvidia in the growing data center market.

The MI300X is based on AMD’s new Instinct architecture and will be available in both PCIe and CXL form factors. It will also support AMD’s ROCm software stack, which is designed to make it easier for developers to build and deploy AI applications.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said that the MI300X is “a major step forward for AMD in the AI market.” She added that the chip will “help our customers accelerate their AI workloads and deliver better results for their customers.”

The chip is priced competitively and offers a number of features that could make it attractive to data center customers.
