Apple And Meta VR Headsets To Offer Passthrough Mixed Reality

August 17, 2022

Apple and Meta’s mixed reality headsets will offer users a unique technology known as the passthrough mixed reality tech.

In passthrough AR, powerful cameras on the outside of a VR headset record video from the outside world and send it to two or more displays, one in front of the user.

Pending the time optical transparent displays will be ready, passthrough approach will be filled in as the preferred short-term option.

Apple has yet to confirm plans for a mixed-reality headset. Reports stated that Apple’s headset will support passthrough video and offer games and other applications. The device will cost thousands of dollars.

According to reports from Bloomberg and The Information, Apple is developing a mixed reality headset that resembles ski goggles. Reportedly, the device features a powerful chip similar to the one that powers Apple’s MacBook, and higher resolution displays than what is currently available.

Meta’s Project Cambria, which is due to be launched later this year will support color passthrough. The device also looks like ski goggles. It will contain pancake optics, a kind of lens that does not need to be calibrated as finely as other VR lenses.

Meta said in May that the price for Cambria would be “significantly higher” than $800.
