Apple has announced plans for deeper integration of its software into the core driving systems of cars. The announcement was made at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple showed off a new car dashboard that it claimed would be able to display data from key instruments such as speed, fuel level and gasoline mileage. The company said it was in talks with automakers such as Ford Motors, Nissan Motors, Mercedes-Benz and Honda Motors about implementing the technology.
Vehicles with the software will not be announced until late next year. Unlike previous versions, which limited themselves to the vehicle’s infotainment displays for playing music and mapping, the software is more deeply embedded in the core system of driving.
Apple’s car software has been in vehicles since 2014 and is available in more than 600 models, including a few motorcycles.
It is largely independent of the vehicle’s own operating systems. Car owners are expected to leave the system even for basic functions like adjusting a car’s climate control system. Therefore, the new update system will remedy this deficiency.
