Apple Loses Patent Trial, Jury Awards $300 Mln To Optis

A U.S. jury awarded $300 million in damages to Optis Wireless Technology LLC and several affiliates after a second patent trial against Apple.

This is the second patent trial against Apple after a jury previously found that Apple had violated five Optis Wireless standards and awarded $506 million in damages. But that was reversed by U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap in Marshall, Texas, who ordered a new trial to determine the number of damages.

Apple clarified after the ruling: “Optis makes no products and its sole business is to sue companies using patents they accumulate. We will continue to defend against their attempts to extract unreasonable payments for patents they acquire.”
