Apple has announced that it will release the next major version of its Mac operating system, called macOS Monterey on October 25.

While macOS Monterey will be available on the recently launched MacBook Pros, which will be released next week, not all Macs will support all of Monterey’s features, as some require a Mac with an Apple T2 chip or an Apple Silicon Mac.

Some amazing features to embellish the new operating system include shortcuts support, which while not immediately replacing Automator or AppleScript will most likely be the go-to way to automate complex tasks on Macs; Universal Control, a feature that allows users to use Mac keyboard and trackpad to seamlessly add multiple Macs or iPads; and a focus mode that adds more details to the Do Not Disturb feature.

While it will not run on everything that currently supports macOS Big Sur, Monterey will run on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, dropping support for a handful of 2013 and 2014 Intel Macs, including the 12-inch MacBook from 2015.

The full support list includes early 2015 and later MacBook Air, early 2015 and later MacBook Pro, early 2016 and later MacBook, late 2015 and later iMac, late 2014 and later Mac mini, 2017 and later iMac Pro, late 2013 and later Mac Pro.
