Although Apple is considering bringing Touch ID back to the iPhone and testing it, it is unlikely Touch ID will return to the iPhone, which has been replaced by Face ID since the 2017 iPhone X version.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been testing Touch ID for the iPhone and is considering adding Touch ID to the power button, as was the case with the iPad Air and iPad Mini. Although Apple has tested both concepts, Gurman believes that neither will see the light of day “at least in the foreseeable future.”
Gurman suggests that Apple could move Touch ID to the power button of iPhones like the iPhone SE. Although this is similar to the iPad’s separation of Face ID and Touch ID, Gurman says he hasn’t “heard anything about that actually being in the pipeline.”
Apple’s Touch ID launch in 2013 was dubbed a “game changer” because it built a fingerprint sensor into its flagship phone, however, AppleInsider says: “Apple will not release a new iPhone model with Touch ID under the display until 2025 at the earliest.”
