Apple’s App Store ecosystem generate $1.1 Trillion in developer billings and sales in 2022

June 2, 2023

According to a study done by Analysis Group, the whole ecosystem of Apple’s App Store earned $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2022 alone.

Over 90% of the income collected from billings and sales came from transactions that occurred outside of the App Store. As a result, because Apple did not charge a fee on these purchases, the majority of the income went straight to developers and other third-party companies.

The billings and sales of digital goods and services consumed on iOS applications accounted for around $104 billion, or 9%, of the total $1.1 trillion. This comprises a variety of transactions, such as digital magazine subscriptions or access to unique content within applications.

On the other hand, sales of actual products and services via iOS applications accounted for a sizable $910 billion, accounting for 81% of total revenue. This category includes expenditures like ordering a ride using a ride-hailing app and purchasing groceries and products online through iOS applications.

In-app advertising on iOS devices, in addition to these income streams, played a big impact. Advertising in iOS applications generated around $109 billion, accounting for 10% of total income.
