AWS launches modular data center

February 23, 2023

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a modular data center solution, known as AWS Modular Data Center (AWS MDC) as part of the U.S. Department of Defense’s $9 billion Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) contract.

The modular data center is made up of separate modules that can be quickly and easily assembled, disassembled and moved, and the design offers a compact, rugged and energy-efficient option for customers. The design can operate in harsh environments and can be used for a range of applications, from mobile command centers to disaster recovery solutions.

“With AWS Modular Data Center, we are converting data centers from fixed infrastructure that is difficult to build and manage in remote environments, to a comprehensive service that is simple to use, secure, cost-effective and can respond to large-scale compute and storage needs wherever the mission demands,” Liz Martin, director of Defense at AWS said.

The data center will enable the US Department of Defense to process, and store classified and sensitive data in a secure, low-latency environment. The modular design will also provide flexibility and scalability to meet changing needs. The JWCC contract aims to modernize the military’s IT infrastructure and improve its ability to process and analyze large amounts of data.

The JWCC program is intended to modernize the military’s IT infrastructure, improving its capacity to process and analyze large amounts of data. The new modular data center is designed to provide a secure, low-latency environment for processing and storing sensitive and classified information.

The modular design will also enable the Department of Defense to scale and adapt to changing requirements, providing increased flexibility and agility. Overall, the new data center is expected to help the military meet the challenges of the rapidly changing technology landscape and improve its data processing and analysis capabilities.
