September 28, 2021

Bandwidth.com recently suffered a DDoS attack after the company reported unexpected outages in its voice and messaging services on September 25.

While the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services company has released a continuous update on outages affecting voice, Enhanced 911 services, messaging and access to the portal.

Subsequent revelations following the attack show that other VoIP providers such as Twillo, Accent, DialPad, Phone.com and RingCentral all suffered similar outages, with VoIP providers blaming another upstream provider for the outages.

According to a screenshot shared by a customer allegedly from a Technical Assistance Center Manager, a DDoS attack was blamed for the attack. The screenshot states: “Bandwidth continues to experience a DDoS attack which is intermittently impacting our services. Our network operations and engineering teams continue active mitigation efforts to protect our network.”

Bandwidth in a recent update noted that services are now being restored, however, the company has yet to publicly explain the main cause of the outage.
