A British software firm has sued Meta for allegedly infringing on its trademark “Threads.” Threads Software Limited says it has owned the trademark for its cloud-based messaging hub since 2012, but Meta launched its own social media platform called Threads in July 2023.
Threads Software Limited has given Meta 30 days to stop using the Threads name in the U.K., or else it will seek an injunction from the courts. The company says it has invested 10 years in building its brand, and that Meta’s use of the Threads name is a “serious threat” to its business.
Threads Software Limited’s Threads service is a cloud-based intelligent message hub that captures, transcribes, and organizes all of a company’s digital messages, emails, and phone calls into one easily searchable database. The service has been actively promoted worldwide since 2014, and has licensed nearly 1,000 organizations worldwide with sales currently growing at 200% a year.
Threads Software Limited is not the first company to sue Meta over trademark infringement since the company rebranded in 2021. Last year, a company called MetaX launched a trademark lawsuit against Meta, alleging that the new name was too similar to its own.
