Canada is targeting digital nomads in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields as part of a new immigration strategy to attract top tech talent from around the world.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced the new strategy on Tuesday at the Collision Conference in Toronto. He said Canada is in a “global race” for high-skilled workers, and that the new strategy will help Canada win that race.

The strategy includes a new dedicated pathway for permanent residents in the STEM sector, as well as a “digital nomad strategy” that will allow highly skilled tech workers to come to Canada for up to six months to work remotely for a foreign employer.

Fraser said the strategy is informed by what’s happening in the United States, where there have been a number of high-profile layoffs in the tech sector. He said Canada is hoping to capitalize on those layoffs by attracting talented tech workers from the U.S.

The strategy also includes plans to help temporary foreign workers develop more skills while they work in Canada. Fraser said this will help Canada retain top talent and build a stronger tech workforce.
