ChatGPT will be far less lazy after update: Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI

February 5, 2024 Sam Altman has said in a recent interview ChatGPT should be “much less lazy now.” OpenAI has promised that a January update was addressing user complaints about the AI’s performance.

Over the past few months, users have reported issues with ChatGPT, including its refusal to complete certain tasks and providing less-than-stellar responses. This feedback sparked a broader discussion on the AI’s efficiency and reliability.

Responding to these concerns, OpenAI rolled out a software update in January targeting the so-called “laziness” of its GPT-4 model. Altman’s announcement on X highlighted this effort, suggesting a significant improvement in the AI’s responsiveness and work ethic.

Amidst these challenges, some users demonstrated creativity in their attempts to coax better performance from ChatGPT, including humorous strategies like promising a $200 tip for more thorough answers.

While the update has been implemented, the root causes of the AI’s previous lackluster performance remain unclear. Speculation ranges from technical glitches to more whimsical theories like seasonal affectation.
