Senator Chuck Schumer is leading a campaign to regulate the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the United States.
According to a person familiar with the plan, Schumer has been circulating a broad framework among experts in recent weeks, as politicians and the public express worry about the social, economic, and security ramifications of artificial intelligence.
The effort comes amid a worldwide rush to create artificial intelligence technology and define its regulations, with China leading the way. While the U.S. government has taken certain steps, critics argue that more comprehensive legislation is required.
Schumer’s guidelines emphasize transparency, accountability, and ethical boundaries, and they include four guardrails for responsible AI: identifying those who trained the algorithm and its intended audience, disclosing data sources, explaining how it arrives at responses, and establishing transparent ethical boundaries. Over the next few weeks, Schumer intends to revise his proposal with input from academic, industrial, and government experts.
