Claude experiences global outage amid surge in app downloads

March 3, 2026 Anthropic’s Claude chatbot experienced a global service disruption Monday, displaying an error message to users while its API remained operational. The outage occurred as Claude climbed to No. 1 among free apps in the U.S. Apple App Store amid heightened public attention over AI defence partnerships.

Visitors to Claude’s web interface were met with a notice stating: “Claude is currently experiencing a temporary service disruption. We’re working on it, please check back soon.”

The company directed users to a status page indicating the issue had been identified and was being fixed. The Claude API, which enables third-party integrations, continued functioning, according to the notice. Outage tracker Down Detector recorded a spike in reports around noon in the U.K., or 4 a.m. on the U.S. West Coast, with users affected globally.

The disruption comes during a high-profile period for Anthropic. The company recently declined to grant what it described as unrestricted access to its AI systems for U.S. Department of Defense use, citing concerns over mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. CEO Dario Amodei said the company would not allow its technology to be used for “mass domestic surveillance” or “fully autonomous weapons.” In contrast, OpenAI announced it would deploy its models within classified U.S. military networks under revised contractual safeguards.

Public reaction has been visible in app rankings and user activity. According to reports from Mashable and Axios, Claude rose to the top position in the U.S. App Store following the defence-related announcements. An Anthropic spokesperson told Mashable that free users have increased by more than 60 per cent since January 2026, daily signups have tripled since November 2025, and paid subscribers have more than doubled this year. Before Super Bowl LX on Feb. 2, 2026, Claude ranked No. 42 in U.S. app charts. Since then, it has remained in the top 10.

OpenRouter data cited by Axios showed Claude’s Sonnet 4.5 ranked fifth among AI models in February 2026, while OpenAI’s offerings were outpaced by multiple competitors during the same period. ChatGPT remains close behind in app rankings.
