Cloudflare 2023 Year in Review: Google back in top spot

December 13, 2023 Cloudflare’s 2023 Year in Review report reveals a significant 25% growth in global internet traffic, highlighting the continuous expansion of the internet as more devices connect and new websites, applications, and services emerge.

The report, based on data from Cloudflare Radar, a service monitoring traffic trends across its network, shows Google reclaiming its position as the most visited web destination, surpassing TikTok, Facebook, and Apple. Interestingly, only a third of IPv6-capable requests were made over IPv6, and a notable 33.2% of all global bot traffic originated from the US.

The report also sheds light on regional internet usage trends, such as traffic drops in Muslim countries during Ramadan and in Mauritania due to government-directed shutdowns. In the realm of mobile internet traffic, Android dominates with over two-thirds of the share, particularly in Africa, Oceania/Asia, and South America. In contrast, iOS traffic never exceeds 70%, with its highest usage in wealthier nations.

Cloudflare’s insights extend to internet speeds worldwide, with Iceland leading with an average download speed of 282.5 Mbps and the lowest latency.

The report also highlights the rapid growth of Starlink’s satellite broadband service, despite its recent introduction, noting that traffic on this new network tripled this year.
