Cloudflare suffered a data center outage on November 3, 2023, affecting its dashboard and APIs. The outage began in the morning and lasted for several hours.
During the outage, customers were unable to access the Cloudflare dashboard or use its APIs. This meant that they could not make changes to their Cloudflare settings or use Cloudflare’s services to protect their websites and applications.
The Cloudflare outage affected products like Cloudflare dashboard, Cloudflare API, Stream API, Workers API, Alert Notification System, Logpush, and WARP / Zero Trust device posture.
Other products, such as Magic Transit, Argo Smart Routing, Workers KV, WAF, Rate Limiting, Rules, WARP / Zero Trust Registration, Waiting Room, Load Balancing and Healthchecks, Cloudflare Pages, Zero Trust Gateway, DNS Authoritative and Secondary, Cloudflare Tunnel, Workers KV namespace operations, and Magic WAN, were still running, but customers could not modify their settings.
Cloudflare said that the outage was caused by a regional power issue that impacted multiple data centers in Oregon. The facilities failed to generate power overnight, and then there were multiple generator failures that took the facilities entirely offline.
Cloudflare failed over to its disaster recovery facility, and most of its services were restored. However, the company is still investigating the root cause of the regional power outage and generator failures.
