COP26: Microsoft’s Brad Smith Speaks on Sustainability Plans

November 5, 2021

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined some of the measures the company has taken to reduce its carbon emissions and its future sustainability plans.

According to Smith, Microsoft is reducing its carbon emissions by about 6% each year by tactically switching to green energy in its data centres. He also revealed that the company is using carbon removal, a strategy in which a particular technology runs through machines and removes the carbon.

For Smith, the company’s strategies may be a bet for the future, but the plans being implemented across the board will change people’s lives. Although people will continue to drive cars and travel by air, cars and aircraft will shift to more sustainable forms of energy.

Going forward, Smith announced that their partnership with energy companies, particularly oil and gas, will involve drawing up plans to help them shift to more climate-friendly products.

Ahead of the UN’s Climate Change Conference, COP26, Microsoft outlined a number of strategies it will use to achieve its goal of being carbon negative by 2030 and its goal of reaching net zero by 2050.
