Disney to use AI to create more realistic movies, theme park experiences

August 9, 2023

Walt Disney Co. has created a task force to study how artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied across its entertainment conglomerate, according to people familiar with the matter.

The task force, which was launched earlier this year, is looking to develop AI applications in-house as well as form partnerships with startups. The sources said the task force is exploring a wide range of potential applications for AI, including creating more realistic and immersive movies and TV shows, developing new interactive experiences for theme parks, improving customer service, and automating tasks

The task force is led by an internal advocate who sees AI as one tool to help Disney control the soaring costs of movie and television production. The person said AI could be used to create digital doubles of actors, which could be used to generate realistic special effects or to create new characters.

AI could also be used to improve customer service at Disney theme parks. For example, AI could be used to create chatbots that can answer questions from guests or to develop virtual assistants that can help guests navigate the parks.
