DOJ to Sue Google Over Digital Ads Business

September 2, 2021

The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing a second monopoly lawsuit against Google over its digital advertising business.

The Justice Department sued the tech giant in October over allegations that the $1 trillion company improperly used its market power to suppress rivals.

Google issued an e-mailed statement saying that its “advertising technologies help websites and apps finance their content, enable small businesses to grow and protect users from exploitative privacy practices and bad ad experiences.”

A lawsuit filed in 38 US states accuses Google of abusing its market power to make its search engine the dominant online search platform in vehicles, televisions, speakers and mobile devices.

In addition, the State of Texas, supported by other states, filed another lawsuit against Google, accusing it of violating antitrust law in running its online advertising work.

It was reported several months ago that Google’s plan to stop a prominent Web tracking tool called “cookies” has caused deep concern among US Justice Department investigators, who have asked ad industry executives whether it would adversely affect smaller rivals.
