Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently criticized Apple for its App Store policy and the use of “100%” cobalt in iPhone and Mac batteries.
Musk made the comments as he unveiled Tesla’s earnings for the second quarter of 2021.
Musk answered questions during the earnings call about Tesla’s plan to open its prized supercharging network to third parties. Musk explained that the company is not interested in creating a “walled garden” but instead to “support the advent of sustainable energy.”
He also revealed, while trying to answer questions about Tesla’s supply chain, that Apple uses 100% cobalt for its batteries, while Tesla uses a much lower amount of cobalt.
Apple has been criticized and questioned in the past over the use of cobalt.
For example a report in 2019 accused Apple of “aiding and abetting” forced child labor in cobalt mines.
