Elon Musk’s Self Driving Technology Fails Against Industry Standard LiDAR

March 17, 2025 A YouTuber named Mark Rober put out a video comparing Tesla’s camera-based Autopilot system to a LiDAR-equipped vehicle found shocking differences in how they handle obstacles—especially in bad weather.

The test put a Tesla Model Y and a LiDAR-equipped Lexus SUV through a series of challenges, including detecting child-sized mannequins, reacting to sudden obstacles, and driving in heavy fog and rain. The LiDAR-equipped Lexus performed well in all tests, while the Tesla struggled, particularly in low-visibility conditions.

Tesla relies only on cameras for its Autopilot system, avoiding sensors like LiDAR and radar. CEO Elon Musk has called LiDAR “stupid, expensive, and unnecessary,” arguing that self-driving systems should work like human vision. In contrast, LiDAR uses lasers to create a 3D map of the environment, helping vehicles detect obstacles even in tough conditions.

Most self-driving companies combine cameras, LiDAR, and radar to improve accuracy and safety. Tesla remains committed to its camera-only approach, but this test highlights its weaknesses—especially when visibility is poor.
