The European Union has established four permanent testing and experimentation sites around Europe to verify that new artificial intelligence (AI) developments are safe before they are released to the public.
The €220 million ($240 million) initiative will establish virtual and physical testing grounds for artificial intelligence and robotics. Manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture and food, and cities will all be the emphasis of the centers.
According to Lucilla Sioli, European Commission director for artificial intelligence and digital industry, the purpose of the centers is to verify that AI is “trustworthy” and does not pose any threats to consumers. She identified deception as one of the most serious hazards related with AI.
Technical University of Denmark, which will oversee one of the centers, says the facilities would serve as a “safety filter” between technology companies and European customers. They will also contribute to the development of AI policy.
