Facebook Glitch Flood Users’ Feeds with Celebrity Spam

August 25, 2022

Thousands of Facebook users reported a glitch on Wednesday on outage tracking website, Downdetector. According to users’ reports, the glitch promoted posts to celebrity fan pages and groups to the top of their timelines.

Users who opened Facebook on mobile devices and desktops received chronological posts to celebrity pages and groups. 81% of the reports Downdetector received identified problems with Facebook feeds, while the rest specifically highlighted the app or website.

The issue follows Meta’s announcements about new changes to Facebook feeds the last month. The new changes provided users with new options to customize feeds in a separate tab on Facebook’s mobile iOS and Android versions. The new news feed allows users to create reels from its homepage and have more control over the content they can see and discover.

Facebook’s parent company Meta has acknowledged and apologized “for any inconvenience” and claim the issue has been resolved.

“Earlier today, a configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook feed. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted,” a spokesperson said.
