Facebook Metaverse Plans Described By McNamee As ‘Dystopian’

November 5, 2021

Roger McNamee, in his interview with the BBC criticized Facebook’s metaverse plans and went on to say that he was far from convinced that the Metaverse was safe in Mark Zuckerberg’s hands.

Sharing his view on the issue, McNamee explained, “It’s a bad idea, and the fact we are all sitting and looking at this like it’s normal should be alarming everyone. Facebook should not be allowed to create a dystopian metaverse. There’s no way that a regulator or policymaker should be allowing Facebook to operate there [in the metaverse] or get into cryptocurrencies. Facebook should have lost the right to make its own choices. A regulator should be there giving pre-approval for everything they do. The amount of harm they’ve done is incalculable.”

Meta’s Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, however, shares a different view. For him, the idea behind the Metaverse is not limited to Facebook alone, but other companies will also participate in what will eventually become of the Metaverse. He went on to assure that while the technology will be a good alternative to video calling, it will not replace real life.
