Facebook is taking a more robust approach to curbing the activities of coordinated groups that engage in various malicious activities on its platform.

The company will pursue a similar strategy to the one used to shut down networks that exert influence through fake accounts.

Facebook aims to curb the malicious actions of real accounts, with two particular rule-breaking activities in mind. Facebook is trying to deal with mass reporting, in which users falsely report the content or accounts of a target in order to shut it down, and with brigading, a coordinated attempt to harass a user or group of users online through mass posts or comments.

A Facebook spokesperson said the latest changes are at an early stage to ensure Facebook’s security teams have the time they need to further identify the root if these issues, rather than simply remove posts or individual accounts.
