Former Google CEO raises concerns over AI’s impact on society

April 6, 2023

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in daily life, with both beneficial and harmful consequences. To that end, former Google CEO and Chairman Eric Schmidt believes that the tech sector must face the difficulties brought by AI and guarantee that it is used for the greater benefit.

Schmidt underlined the need of keeping AI technology from inflicting harm to people in an interview with ABC News. He used the example of social media affecting election results and, in extreme situations, causing fatalities. Schmidt also highlighted AI’s ability to tackle key social challenges, such as boosting access to resources in fields such as health and education.

Schmidt stated, “Imagine a world where you have an A.I. tutor that increases the educational capability of everyone in every language globally. These are remarkable.”

Schmidt, on the other hand, understood that AI presents new and severe concerns. He voiced concern about how artificial intelligence may be used to control people’s daily lives and undermine democratic processes. Schmidt also expressed worries about the use of artificial intelligence in biology and cybersecurity.
