The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, via FTC Chair Lina Khan, confirmed that the commission is considering writing rules to address some prevalent issues.

These issues include the fight against data privacy abuses, poor online security and the use of algorithms that can lead to discrimination.

Khan explained that heavy reliance on the internet especially during the COVID-19 pandemic fueled the need to formulate rules in this direction.

In the letter to Senator Richard Blumenthal, Lisa Khan said the rule would focus on online privacy, security and civil rights violations.

She said, “I share your concerns about commercial surveillance and am committed to ensuring the FTC is using its full suite of tools to protect Americans from unfair or deceptive practices online.” The proposed rule is said to be streamlined alongside some other rules proposed earlier in July.
