Google Acquires Raxium As It Pushes AR Ambitions

Google has acquired AR company Raxium for an undisclosed fee as it pushes its AR ambitions.

Raxium is a young start-up working on MicroLED screen technologies that are important for wearables as well as AR and VR headsets.

“Today we’re announcing that Google has acquired Raxium, an innovator in single panel MicroLED display technologies. The team at Raxium has spent five years creating miniaturized, cost-effective and energy-efficient high-resolution displays that have laid the foundation for future display technologies. Raxium’s technical expertise in this area will play a key role as we continue to invest in our hardware efforts,” Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services at Google said in a blog post.

As part of its AR drive, Google acquired the Canadian AR glasses company North in 2020. In addition, the company is also looking for experts for its augmented reality OS team. The aim of the project is to develop software for an unknown “innovative AR device.”

“The Google Augmented Reality AR team is a group of engineers, designers and research scientists tasked with building the foundations for great immersive computing and prototyping helpful, delightful user experiences,” Google said.
