Google Adds Visual Search Features For Images And Video

September 30, 2021

On Wednesday, Google announced a new feature that allows Google users to combine images and text in search queries to make items more searchable.

The feature also offers sorting within videos via its point-and-ask mode of search, including YouTube.

It allows users to perform reverse-image searches when surfing with the Google iOS app or desktop browser Chrome, meaning that each time users selects an image, they will be provided with similar online visuals that could help shoppers find the item they want and where to buy it, ultimately leading them to Google Shopping.

The tech company announced that the new feature will be available through its Google Lens search tool in the coming months, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence.

Commenting on the latest development, Prabhakar Raghavan, Senior Vice President of Google, said: “With this new capability, you can tap on the Lens icon when you’re looking at a picture of a shirt, and ask Google to find you the same pattern — but on another article of clothing, like socks. This helps when you’re looking for something that might be difficult to describe accurately with words alone.”
