Google admits to its Gemini AI launch video was not accurate

Google on Samsung Tablet

December 13, 2023 Google recently faced criticism following the revelation that its demonstration of the Gemini AI model was partially fabricated. The tech giant had introduced Gemini, touted as its most advanced AI model, with a video showcasing its ability to rapidly recognize and describe illustrations of a duck. However, Bloomberg columnist Parmy Olson highlighted that Google admitted to reducing latency and shortening outputs for the demo, leading to misrepresentation of Gemini Pro’s actual capabilities.

The video, which was edited to appear more impressive, gave the impression that Gemini could instantly recognize images using its multimodal thinking abilities. This suggested a significant advancement in AI reasoning, a key focus in the industry. However, the reality was that the demonstration was significantly sped up, and Gemini Pro’s actual capabilities might not be as groundbreaking as portrayed.

This incident raises questions about the authenticity of AI demonstrations and the pressure on tech companies to showcase cutting-edge advancements. Google’s approach in this instance, prioritizing the appearance of capability over transparency, has drawn criticism and skepticism. This is not the first time Google has faced issues with AI model launches, as earlier this year, its ChatGPT competitor Bard was shown making a false statement in a demo.

Google’s latest misstep with Gemini’s demonstration adds to the growing concerns about the reliability and transparency of AI technology presentations by major tech companies.
