Google Chrome update boosts memory efficiency and battery life

February 22, 2023

Google Chrome has received an update that includes new features aimed at improving memory efficiency and decreasing the impact on a device’s battery life.

A new low-power mode is included in the update, which reduces power consumption by limiting resource usage and minimizing background activity. The browser is also more efficient in memory management, requiring less memory to run multiple tabs and applications.

Google first announced the new Energy Saver and Memory Saver features in December. The new modes make the browser run faster on Windows, MacOS, and ChromeOS. Energy Saver mode and Memory Saver mode are now available globally and enabled by default with the release of Chrome 110.

Memory Saver mode will assist users who have multiple tabs open at the same time. It frees up memory from inactive tabs, allowing active websites to run smoothly. When you return to them, the inactive tabs reload.

Meanwhile, Battery Saver mode is activated when a laptop’s battery level reaches 20%. It then restricts background activity and visual effects on websites that use animations and video.

The updates are in response to long-standing user complaints about Chrome’s proclivity to consume memory and drain batteries, particularly on mobile devices. Chrome aims to address these concerns with this update and provide users with a more streamlined browsing experience.
