Google Drive has launched new search filters for users to quickly find and retrieve files. The new filters can be accessed below the file path, and users will soon see three filter options: file type, people, and last modified.
Previously, these filters were only available in Google Drive search, but now they are accessible “throughout Drive” to help users narrow down and find relevant files faster in any view. The new feature is available to all Google Workspace customers, including legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, as well as users with personal Google accounts.
The new search filters are part of Google’s Material You web redesign, which aims to help users complete their most frequent tasks more quickly. In addition to the search filters, users can now hover over a file (in list view) to reveal shortcuts for quickly sharing, downloading, renaming, and favoriting. This feature only appears on wide screens. There is also a multi-select toolbar to take bulk actions.
The rollout of the new search filters started on March 30, 2023, and will be fully available over the coming weeks. Rapid Release domains will have an extended rollout, potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility, while Scheduled Release domains will have a gradual rollout, up to 15 days for feature visibility.
Admins have no control over this feature, and end-users can visit the Help Center to learn more about finding files in Google Drive. The new search filters were listed as an upcoming release in Google’s roadmap.
