Google enhances AI-powered search

August 16, 2023

Google is introducing enhancements to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), a conversational AI mode aimed at helping users comprehend online information.

Among the upgrades are tools for defining unfamiliar terms, bolstering comprehension, cross-language coding, and a feature that enables AI assistance during browsing. This mirrors Bing Chat’s text highlighting for further understanding. Additionally, SGE now provides improved programming assistance by simplifying code understanding and debugging. Code segments receive syntax highlighting, differentiating elements like keywords and comments.

The experimental “SGE while browsing” allows engagement with publisher content. Users can access AI-generated article summaries with direct links to key points. Similar to Bing Chat’s content summary, this feature is Google’s response to an evolving AI landscape.

The feature aims at free content, avoiding paywalled articles. Meanwhile, publishers can block this feature for their content. It is available on Android, iOS, and Chrome.
